"Gashouse Gang," Esko Style

Longtime Esko coach and athletic director Les Knuti organized a club for boys in "downtown" Esko in the late 1930s and called it the "Gashouse Gang" after the popular --- and notoriously rowdy --- St. Louis Cardinals baseball team of that era. Captured here (momentarily, at least) in front of Hank's Cafe were, from left, Roy Koivisto, Bob Smith, Sam Liupakka, Bill Bergstedt, Bob Liupakka, Dick Lovestrand and Merton Pykkonen.
