A True Community Leader

A True Community Leader

Besides organizing and guiding development of the school system through its formative years, A. L. Winterquist was deeply involved in the greater community.  He helped establish the state’s first Future Farmers of America chapter, the community’s first 4-H Club, the Thomson Township Fair, the Farmers’ Club, the Arrowhead Cooperative Creamery, the Esko Cannery and the Locker Plant.  He also was the school’s first athletic coach, served many Lutheran churches as a lay minister, and won the Farmer-Labor Party endorsement for Congress in 1934 but (rare for him) lost in a hotly-contested four-way race. The photo is not dated, but note the roll-top desk and two-piece telephone. (Esko Historical Society photo)
