All-Purpose Vehicle: The 'Jukkari'

All-Purpose Vehicle: The 'Jukkari'

As did farmers throughout North America, Thomson Township residents often found it practical to modify old automobiles into primary or secondary tractors.  The English term for such a vehicle is “joker,” but given the ethnic origin of many residents of northern Minnesota, northwestern Wisconsin and Michigan's Upper Peninsula, it became known in regional "Finglish" as the “jukkari.”  This one is shown working on the Henry Pera farm on a July day in 1940.  The young man at the wheel is John Johnson, whose father, Matt Johnson, had immigrated from Kalajoki, Finland.
