Rooting Out the Rutabagas, 1940

Rooting Out the Rutabagas, 1940

Thomson Township made its mark in the first half of the century as a dairy center, but besides growing hay for the cattle, local farmers also devoted considerable time, energy and acreage to raising crops for the table. The Esko chapter of the Future Farmers of America --- the first in the state, established in 1929 --- had a special rutabaga project in 1940.  Several photos in an FFA scrapbook of that era depict planting, fertilizing, weeding and ultimately, as shown here, digging the rutabagas.  The boys in the photo were not identified.
