Country Kids on Photo Day

Country Kids on Photo Day

Judging from several earnest, almost apprehensive expressions, this just might have been the first time some of these rural boys and girls had their photos taken. They were fourth- and fifth-graders, as noted on the bottom, and they were stationed on the front steps of the Washington School in 1922. The fact that surnames are scrawled on the photo may be distracting, but fortunately the writer was careful not to cover these intriguing faces (click on photo to enlarge). Most of the students would have been 10 to 12 years old at the time, meaning they were born about 100 years ago this year.  (Photo courtesy of Diane Maunu)
