A Memorable Day

A Memorable Day

Wearing a broad smile, Finnish President Urho Kekkonen, left foreground, found himself immersed in a sea of Finnish-Americans on his visit to Esko in 1961.  He had arrived October 24 at the Duluth Airport and was greeted by a ceremony that included the Esko High School Band directed by Richard Sarkela.  The following day, among several regional appearances, Mr. Kekkonen visited the pioneer monument and old school house at the then-Finnish American Memorial Foundation Museum, now the Esko Historical Society Museum (see “Museum” page).  Enthusiastic residents crammed the town center to catch a glimpse of the president, who later sent the shirt he was wearing as a memento for the museum. At extreme lower left is Minnesota Governor Elmer L. Andersen. (Esko Historical Society photo)
