Establishing a Tradition

Leather helmets in hand, Esko football players come off the field in 1948 after defeating McGregor 7-6. This was the third year of Esko football and the Eskomos and Orioles (later to be called the Mercs) had played to two previous ties. Superintendent William Nigg organized a spring practice in 1946 prior to final preparation of a field and Les Knuti’s return from four years in the Coast Guard. Coach Knuti took charge that fall, and by the time he retired in 1965 his teams had won 88 games, lost 21 and tied 7. Identifiable players here are Ken Pykkonen, No. 24; Bob Seikkula, 28; Millard Barney, 26, and Ken Sunnarborg, 30. (Photo courtesy of Bob Seikkula)
