Moses Liupakka: Mechanic to Merchant

Five new Chevrolet dump trucks are set to go to the Carlton County Highway Department after Moses Chevrolet of Esko won a sales bid in 1960.  Moses Liupakka, who went into business as a mechanic in a rented one-stall garage in about 1930, had become a franchised Chevrolet dealer in 1934.  By 1960, his entrepreneurial spirit had created Moses Service Station, Moses Chevrolet, Liupakka Oil Company, dealerships for Frigidaire appliances and Sherwin-Williams paints, a Mileage gas station and a wrecker service. The building behind the trucks was constructed in 1949 and served as the business center. It also had two apartments above the main-floor showroom. Moses, who died in 1963 following an auto accident, is on the right in this photo with his oldest son, Sam. (Photo courtesy of Frank Liupakka)
