Esko's Second Superintendent

Esko's Second Superintendent

William J. Nigg, center, was appointed superintendent of schools upon the retirement of A. L. Winterquist in 1945.  He would serve for 10 years until becoming the superintendent in Litchfield, Minn. His widow, Iris Nigg Lundin, wrote in June 2010 from her home in Savoy, Ill., that Thomson Township residents “became like family” to her and her husband.  “The school,” she said, “was the center of everything.”  Nigg, who died in 1983, is flanked in this photo by the 1952 school board, from left, Charles Mannila, chairman Eric Tan, treasurer Emerth Nynas, Richard Lawson, William Jarvi and the clerk of the board, A. L. Winterquist.  (Esko Historical Society photo)
