Where the Buffalo Now Roam

Where the Buffalo Now Roam

Less than a mile north of Highway 61 on Church Road, buffalo are a common sight these days as they graze near a reinforced fence on the Quarter Master Buffalo Farm.  Owner Don Solwold, who spent 37 years in the Air Force before retiring as a colonel, began developing the farm in 1973 on property homesteaded by township pioneer Simeon Palkie a century earlier. Solwold started with two buffalo in 1974, but says he quickly learned buffalo are gregarious, have strong herd instincts and, in his words, “aren’t happy” unless there are at least five of them.  He now maintains herds of between 50 and 60 and sells Quarter Master meat products (including quarter-pound burgers) to area restaurants and other outlets.
