1941-45: Esko Goes to War

World War II took a heavy toll on the small community: 10 young men lost their lives in military service. Many others were wounded and some spent time in prisoner-of-war camps. On the home front, township residents (who earlier had rallied to raise money and relief supplies for Finland in its Winter Wars with the Soviet Union) were fully engaged in the American war effort. There were fundraising campaigns, scrap drives, war bond subscriptions, rationing of essential goods and all manner of community and school projects dedicated to the cause. A photo page in the 1944 school yearbook gave at least a sense of the local commitment. Click on photo to expand. (Photo, "The Lincoln Log," 1944)
