Raising the Standard

Raising the Standard

A local legend, Walter Maunu had become one of the first boys in Minnesota to clear six feet in the high jump when he did so in 1935. His school record was officially six feet plus 3/8th of an inch. It stood until 1980 when Todd Peterson, a junior, jumped 6-0 7/8 at an indoor meet at the University of Minnesota. Peterson broke a toe on his take-off, an injury that affected his performance the rest of the season, but he in 1981 he raised the record to 6-3 1/2. Here, Peterson soars over the bar in a meet at Grand Rapids where he set the modern record. (Photo courtesy of Todd Peterson)
